What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a unique form of psychotherapy in which I guide you to replace negative images associated with symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress, anxiety, and various other symptoms with positive images that you choose.
The triggers are gone once the negative images become replaced by positive ones. This process typically happens quickly, sometimes in as little as one session!
Here’s how ART works.
Using the power of eye movements or tapping, combined with other well-established therapeutic techniques such as guided imagery or Gestalt and Psychodynamic therapies, ART uses the brain’s and body’s natural processing and learning to sever the negative emotional ties to triggers and memories.
We then create new imagery and sensations that allow you to empower yourself with positive feelings, emotions, and thoughts.
ART is like EMDR in that we use bilateral stimulation techniques such as eye movements or tapping to move out negative thoughts and sensations. However, EMDR is a non-directive technique, while ART is a guided therapeutic technique in which I will give you instructions on what to do and how to do it to cultivate healing more quickly.
ART works – believe it or not.
As a trained EMDR and ART therapist, I know that sometimes these techniques feel like they must involve smoke and mirrors.
The truth is that ART is an evidence-based standard as evaluated and recognized by the Society of Clinical Psychology, Div. 12 of the American Psychological Association (APA).
I’ve seen it work with many clients first-hand and have experienced healing through using it myself.
ART is not magic!
Clients often ask whether ART is magic after experiencing the healing power that they have had the entire time, but ART brought to life. Clients will often refer to it as my “magic trick.” Honestly, it’s not actual magic. It’s a science that can come with some speedy and long-lasting results. We don’t understand yet all the whys and hows of it working, but we know that it does.
Research shows us that bilateral stimulation produces theta waves in the brain, connecting from the left and right hemispheres of the brain and increasing activity in the brain’s memory center. We know that these theta waves are often associated with imagination and creativity and are also present in meditative states of calm relaxation.
Imagination is how the human mind learns. We learn through stories, art, and creating new things. Imagination empowers change and growth. From this, we can surmise that ART taps into a core learning power that allows us to process our thoughts, feelings, and experiences through a creative lens, which we can then refocus our attention away from the things that cause us harm toward the positive things we want to live into.
Is it for everyone?
ART is helpful for most, if not all, population groups and is efficacious for most people who use it. There are varying degrees of success depending on each client and their preparedness.
If you aren’t ready for change, ART can’t force it. If you want to change, prepare yourself to do it. If you aren’t ready yet but committed to getting to where you will be, I can help you with that as we prepare for ART.
The following are some issues that ART can quickly and effectively treat: Anxiety, Depression, Phobias, Panic Attacks, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), Addictions or Substance Abuse, Performance Anxiety, Family Issues, Victimization or Poor Self-Image, Victimization and Sexual Abuse, Relationship Issues and Infidelity, Codependency, Grief, Job-Related Stress, Pain Management, Memory Enhancement, and Dyslexia Anxiety.
